“The Diamond Sutra Liturgy”

A b o u t   t h e   D i a m o n d   S u t r a   L i t u r g y

The “Diamond Sutra Liturgy Grand Puja” was the first ever immersive multimedia Buddhist Puja. Led by honorable Sangha from Singapore and Malaysia, the puja featured “live” chanting and singing to the accompaniment of a live orchestra and a chorus. Besides musical elements, lights, projections, and chorographical elements were incorporated into the puja. The amalgamation of sensations from the six senses allows participants appreciate the beauty and profoundness of the Buddha Dharma albeit in a never before manner. We immerse ourselves fully in this experiential approach to conducting Puja and learning Dharma.

The “Diamond Sutra” Liturgy is a rather obscure piece of literature first translated in the Song Dynasty. It is prevalently used in the Ming dynasty and today mostly by the Acharyas of the Tantric Buddhist denomination. These are mostly found amongst the “Bai” people of Yunan China. Other than these, it is more commonly used in Taiwan with the Taiwan dialect.

The liturgy boast of very beautiful poetic verses and coupled with the unique tunes of this liturgy, it is a piece of art both in literature and musically. Ven. You Wei (Di Zang Lin, Singapore) liked this liturgy very much after chancing upon it accidentally but lamented that it was only available the Hokkien dialect. He wanted to make the liturgy more accessible to Mandarin speaking Buddhists and through this endeavor to also preserve the musical scores. The initial recording of the liturgy was completed in June 2022 and was loaded onto the DZL YouTube page in March 2023.
