新年新希望，今年是牛年，牛在佛教也有甚深的寓意。「十牛圖頌」，是以牛譬喻這念心，說明修行心路歷程的十個層次。修行人對於每一頌都要了達其中的義理，以契悟這念心性，也藉此反省檢討，了解自己現在修行境界的層次，進而明白「更上一層樓」的用功之道。如此，修行就不會走遠路，也不會以凡濫聖或是心生卑微。所以，依著「十牛圖」﹙尋牛、見跡、見牛、得牛、牧牛、騎牛歸家、忘牛存人、人牛俱忘、返本還源、入廛垂手﹚的次第用功，如是「降伏其心」、如是「護念其心」，就能夠圓滿自利利他的菩薩行。
希望諸位通過在地藏林的修持能夠如禪宗《十牛圖》所示能夠降伏心中的「蠻牛」，不被外境所染，通徹法義最後達到「無礙任運」的境界－清淨自在，一切時吉祥，一切處吉祥，見性成佛。
The ox has its special place in Ch'an Buddhism. The famous "Ten Ox Herding" pictures describe the Zen training path to enlightenment. Folk images are accompanied by poems and commentaries that depict a young ox-herder's quest to tame, train, and transform his heart and mind, a process that is represented by subduing the ox.
We hope that this will be a transformational year for us as we emerge from a tough year before. As we tame our monkey minds, may we also triumph over the many challenges which life has for us!
