依佛教的說法，亡者過去活著的時候種下的種種惡因，以致他們投生惡趣。那些因執著於財產和子女的亡者，因此轉生為受苦的眾生。清明祭祖之時，佛弟子當以讀誦經文，稱念佛號為主，透過為先親修功德，讓先親得以轉生善趣。佛教建議活著的親友做功德回向給先親，幫助他們減少痛苦。《善生經》中提及子女義務之一便是常修功德迴向予自己父母。因此，佛教徒都應在清明節追思懷念已故的先親，並以先親的名字做供養來幫助先親。《戶外經》中也提到生者心中的感激會促使他們以亡者的名字來做供養。
Qingming Festival is when Chinese traditionally visit ancestral tombs to spruce them up. For thousands of years, the Chinese imperials, nobility, merchants and peasantry alike have gathered together to remember the lives of the departed, to visit their tombstones to pray for their ancestors and to offer remembrances of their ancestors. The Qingming Festival is a form of posthumous respect and filial piety offered to a Chinese person's ancestors, departed relatives, or parents. Buddhism advocates that one should accrue merits for ancestors by providing Dana in the ancestor's name.. One could also observe precepts and participate in pujas organised by monasteries.
