Our Wonderful Moment

Brief Introduction

The name “Di Zang Lin” is coined after the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva or the Bodhisattva of Great Aspiration. Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is also known to the Chinese as “地藏菩薩”- he, who made great vows to help all beings in all realms gain enlightenment before he would, in turn, become a Buddha. In the same spirit, Di Zang Lin was established with the aspiration to help Buddhist practitioners learn the teachings of Buddha, to cultivate what they learnt with mindfulness, and to emulate Di Zang Bodhisattva through charitable works.

Di Zang Lin was established in 1997 with a clear vision of bringing devotees together to learn and practice the teachings of Dharma. Through the years, DZL has evolved and prides itself as a Mahayana (lineage) based Buddhist centre with a difference.

Early Years (1990 to 2006)

In 1995, Venerable Zhen Dao bought a unit along Geylang Lorong 12, intending to set up a temple for devotees who wanted to learn about Buddhism. During then, there was very little known about Buddhism. Venerable Zhen Dao devoted his time to teaching devotees and guided them carefully on both Buddha Dharma and Buddhist rituals.

Under Venerable Zhen Dao’s guidance, the devotees of DZL grew in numbers, and soon, there was limited space for conducting major events. Hence, there was a need to move to a bigger premise. This move came about in 2003 to a rented premise along Mohamed Sultan Road. At the new site, more activities were carried out and soon, through words of mouth and the growing awareness of Buddhism, there was a need to move yet again to a larger and more conducive location. Unfortunately, it was also around this period that Venerable Zhen Dao was taken ill and he passed away in 2005, appointing his only disciple, Venerable You Wei to be the next Abbot of DZL.

Ven. Shi You Wei

Ven You Wei was born into a humble Lee family. His grandfather has given him the name Siew Hoong (Xiu Feng). Like his name, the young boy was shy and reserved. Being the eldest in the family and the first baby to a large extended family, the young boy was very much the centre of attention and expectations. Siew Hoong grew up healthily and attended school like any normal child in Singapore. The young family has two other children later – a girl and a boy.

Siew Hoong was a bright and clever child. He excelled in his academic studies since young and was often the teachers’ pet. Though quiet and reserved, he enjoys the company of many close friends and many of whom are still his friends today.
